Addiction Recovery Coaching

Addiction Recovery Coaching is an approach that supports and empowers individuals within their personal and professional systems to create self-directed, sustainable outcomes based on improved connection and understanding. It is a client-centred, forward-focused intervention to support growth, development, and transformation in focused areas of your life.

It is a powerful tool in working with addiction, substance use, behavioural, and mental health disorders because it pays attention to how the individual operates within their various personal and professional systems. This method supports the individual in creating strong recovery resources within the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual areas within the environment, to deepen and anchor addiction recovery.

How does coaching support recovery?

It creates opportunities in your personal and professional lives for sustainable change by helping us to (re)connect with our needs, wants and values.

It is about working with you as the individual within the context of your various situations and relationships, so that you can focus on creating realistic plans and goals.

It builds stronger interpersonal connections with self and others to create relationships that are focused on empowerment, respect, and understanding.

My specialty as a coach is working within the addiction, recovery, and wellness niche to support individuals and families challenged with addiction, substance use, behavioural, and mental health disorders. There are many people that are also challenged with impulsive, excessive habits and avoidant behaviour.

Recovery Coaching assists in creating a lifestyle that is sustainable and meaningful by considering your needs, wants, values and aspirations, and is made up of emotional, social, physical, spiritual, and mental resources. It is about reconnecting, rebuilding, and recovering what you have lost.

  • Setting achievable, long-term goals and developing short-term action plans to achieve them within predetermined time frames.

  • Identifying harmful triggers that could result in lapse or relapse and learning to deal with these issues in daily life with the use of forward-focused and solutions-driven tools and techniques.

  • Learning about the physiological and neurological elements of substance and behavioural abuse disorders, and what the major causes of addiction.

What is Addiction Recovery Coaching NOT About?

  • TREATING ADDICTION...recovery coaching operates within the wellness paradigm and is not addiction treatment. It supports the work of addiction treatment and helps clients build sustainable recovery and wellness.

  • OVEREXPLORING THE PAST...it's about moving forward in a solutions'-driven, goal-orientated way. Of course, understanding and resolving some of the challenging experiences and unresolved trauma may be part of the recovery process.

  • BEING GIVEN ADVICE...you have all the answers you need inside yourself. Coaching is an autonomous intervention where you are encouraged to take responsibility for your process to become a well person.

  • BEING TOLD WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT...the long-term goals you choose and short-term plans you make will be your own. You are supported in being able to take ownership of your process so that you can develop a manageable, sustainable recovery plan.

  • HOLDING ONTO GUILT AND SHAME, AND UNHEALTHY EMOTIONAL STATES...it's about understanding the past, embracing forgiveness, and learning to live in the present. It is about becoming familiar with your emotional states and using this information to create emotional wellbeing.
